Spam filtering and processing made easier // Faculty channels// Social Explorer// Introducing the Beyond Steel digital archive// LU-ALERT: Emergency alert signup reminder

SPAM FILTERING AND PROCESSING MADE EASIER
LTS recently made improvements to its spam processing page so that users can better implement spam filters and options on their email accounts. Logon to the Account Maintenance page at http://www.lehigh.edu/account and click "Configure SPAM tagging." Changes to the page include:1. A sensitivity slider bar to allow users to adjust the value that triggers spam tagging on messages.2. Whitelist and Blacklist input fields.3. The ability to control the destination of spam (Inbox or SPAM folder) or to discard it completely.4. Retention options for discarding spam after a certain period of time. If you have any questions contact your departmental computing consultant.

FACULTY CHANNELS
A new feature to the portal has been the addition of the "Faculty Channels" tab. These faculty channels make it easier than ever for faculty to assign grades, check their schedule, work with advisees, etc. All of these features existed previously in Banner, but now they are more accessible through the portal. *SOCIAL EXPLORER*A new U.S. demographic research tool is available from the Library Databases page and through the ASA online catalog. Called Social Explorer <http://databases.lib.lehigh.edu/finder/dbfull.asp?DBID=224>, this online resource incorporates mapping and analytical software with U.S. Census data going back to 1940. With this product, users can create interactive maps and reports down to the Census Tract geographic level. For example, even first time users can easily use the mapping slide show feature to create an animated display of maps illustrating the changes that have occurred over the past 50 years to a population or economic variable at a state, county, or census tract level. The software is intuitive and can be queried and manipulated to quickly produce visually appealing, informative results. Social Explorer is certain to be useful for sociologists, historians and political scientists.

INTRODUCING THE BEYOND STEEL DIGITAL ARCHIVE
The LTS Digital Library has launched its newest collection: Beyond Steel: An Archive of Lehigh Valley Industry and Culture, http://digital.lib.lehigh.edu/beyondsteel . At noon on Wednesday, October 24th History Professor John Kenley Smith, who has provided the primary scholarly guidance for the site, will introduce it in Linderman Library's Humanities Forum (room 200). He will use the site's digitized letters, books, photographs, and oral histories to illustrate how this new resource can illuminate researchers' understanding of the Lehigh Valley's industrial boom in the mid 19th century and the later decline of heavy industry. This is a brown bag lunch event with beverage and dessert provided. Call 610-758-3039 for more information or consult www.lehigh.edu/lts/friends <http://www.lehigh.edu/lts/friends>

ARE YOU READY FOR OFFICE 2007?
LTS recently announced its plans to migrate to Office 2007. Are you ready? Even if you decide not to make the leap to Office 2007 just yet, you must at least install the Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack. Without this tool, you will not be able to open and read files you receive that were created in the higher version. Click this link to download the tool: http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/docs/office/FileFormatConverters.exe . Save it to your Desktop, then run the installer. It's that simple! If you've already upgraded, or plan to upgrade soon, consider attending any of the Office 2007 Suite seminars to smooth your transition to the new version. View the seminar schedule and register here: http://cf.lehigh.edu/seminar/ Once you've upgraded your on-campus computer, you may want to upgrade your personally-owned computer. Faculty and staff can purchase a copy of Office 2007 from the Bookstore for $10 for "work at home" use. Click here for more details: http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/software/MSCampus-fs.html

WHAT'S NEW IN THUNDERBIRD 2.0?
The latest version of Mozilla Thunderbird includes several new features: --Forward and Back buttons allow navigation through message history--The folder pane shows Recent, Favorite and Unread folders--New mail alerts include subject, sender and message preview text--File button pull-down menu includes Recent folders to allow faster filing--Improved message tagging lets you create your own tags, and assign multiple tags to messages, to more easily organize your mail For more on these and other features, see "Customizing and Using Thunderbird 2.0" at: http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/docs/thunderbird20/thunderbirdmail.htm Download, installation and setup instructions are available at: http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/docs/tb2setup/index.htm

VISTA UPDATE
Lehigh Library and Technology Services (LTS) is currently testing Windows Vista with a variety of systems and software applications. Currently, there are many incompatibilities that still need to be addressed before LTS can fully support Vista computers connected to Lehigh's network. The primary application that does not yet support Windows Vista is the "install software" application that allows WIRED students and Lehigh faculty/staff to download and install many Lehigh licensed applications. For users running Windows Vista it is recommended that the public computing sites http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/tims/facilities/hours.html be used for accessing these applications until an install software solution becomes available. Despite the many compatibility issues, Windows Vista is available on computers purchased from Lehigh recommended vendors such as Dell, Gateway and Lenovo. The Windows Vista Ultimate media is also available free to students who pay the technology fee and to faculty and staff at the Bookstore for a $15 fee. It is recommended at this time that users only upgrade or install Windows Vista when there is reason to do so. LTS will continue to work with vendors to solve the issues and will distribute information to the Lehigh community as it becomes available. If you have any questions regarding the use of Windows Vista at Lehigh please refer to the Lehigh Vista web page located at http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/docs/vista/index.html or call your departmental computing consultant or the helpdesk at 8-HELP.

REFWORKS@LEHIGH IS HERE
LTS now offers a solution for managing all your citations for articles, books, reports, scores, web sites, etc. The solution is RefWorks: Your Online Research Management, Writing, and Collaboration Tool, a web-based service fully integrated with Lehigh's library systems and MS-WORD. RefWorks is accessible anytime, anywhere and can be used in collaborative ways for class work or by research teams. Your Lehigh user name/password will allow access to the LTS subscription from off-campus, just as it does for our online library. In addition, you will need to set up a RefWorks account, where your personal library will reside. To get started using RefWorks, please visit the Database Finder page for RefWorks at http://databases.lib.lehigh.edu/finder/dbfull.asp?DBID=211 . There you will see the on and off campus connection URL's and a link to the RefWorks Tutorials and Help. Tina Richardson, Counseling Psychology Professor, wrote: "RefWorks has improved my efficiency immensely with regard to conducting literature searches and creating reference lists. It is tremendously helpful when advising students regarding their research and sharing citations." Since the start of RefWorks@Lehigh in May, over one hundred accounts have been set up. Graduate students are about half of the current RefWorks users at Lehigh. Over 50 faculty, graduate students, and staff have attended in person or online the twelve hosted RefWorks webinars offered by LTS to date. RefWorks@Lehigh is part of the campus-wide writing and information literacy initiative and includes features such as "Write-N-Cite," a citation formatter compatible with MS-WORD, and "Ref Grab-It," a way to store your bookmarks. RefWorks "knows" our library collections. When you save a reference in your RefWorks library, a Lehigh Link (SFX) is automatically assigned to it. Citations selected from the library's research databases and Google Scholar may be directly exported to RefWorks. Citations stored earlier in EndNote can be easily exported to RefWorks. Free RefWorks Fundamental Webinars are announced often in campus news. For more about RefWorks@Lehigh, write to mailto:refworks@lehigh.edu?subject=Re:%20LTS%20Digest%20September%206,%202007%20Issue mailto:mailto:refworks@lehigh.edu?subject=Re:%20LTS%20Digest%20September%206,%202007%20Issue

LU-ALERT: EMERGENCY ALERT SIGNUP REMINDER
Lehigh's new emergency alert notification system, LU-ALERT, ensures that students, faculty, and staff will receive timely and accurate text messages and email in the event of an emergency. NOW ONLINE: 2007 "GET CONNECTED@LEHIGH"
Every Fall, LTS publishes Get Connected@Lehigh, a color brochure that highlights LTS services available to faculty, staff, and students. Printed copies are available in both libraries -- and now, an online version of the brochure is now available: http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/getconnected.swf . To obtain copies for distribution or display, contact the Help Desk at 8-HELP.

ACHIEVING EXCELLENCE AT LEHIGH: A LOOK AT STUDENT RESEARCH
For Freshman Orientation, the Lehigh Libraries created a 15 minute video highlighting exciting projects conducted by Lehigh students. This video highlights not only the students' projects, but how they were supported by Lehigh's excellent library tools and staff. The video is available for viewing and/or downloading in iTunesU http://www.lehigh.edu/itunesu .. Once iTunes opens, look under 'About Lehigh' to click on 'Resources' and the film is named 'Library Orientation'. Feel free to share this video with students when assigning research projects.

NEW CLIR FELLOW JOINS LTS
For the second time, Lehigh is participating in the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) Fellowship Program, designed to give the "best recent Ph.D. recipients in the humanities a unique opportunity to develop as information professionals and scholars." Our CLIR Fellow is Lauren Coats, who recently completed her PhD in American Literature at Duke University. While working on her degree, Lauren gained her first library experience working for the Jay B. Hubbell Center in Duke's Rare Book, Manuscript, and Special Collections Library. Born and raised in Kentucky, Lauren has lived most of her life in the South. She's happy to return to Pennsylvania, where she spent her college years. At Lehigh, she will combine her academic background with the opportunities afforded by Lehigh's digital and information resource initiatives. Among other projects, she will be working on digitizing selections from Lehigh's collection of travel and exploration narratives, a project that is closely related to her doctoral research. Now in its fourth year, the fellowship provides new scholars in the humanities "a unique opportunity to develop expertise in the new forms of scholarly research and the information resources that support them, both traditional and digital, that are challenging research institutions." Lehigh's previous CLIR fellow was Megan Norcia, now an assistant professor at SUNY Brockport.

Prep your email for summer // Changing the default SENT folder that IMP uses // Bumping your quota: Live demo! // Twenty-five years of the Web of Science now available // Linderman Library closed May 10 and 11 // Library hours, exams, and summer sessions

Prep your email for summer
Lehigh email users have several options for summertime handling of email.

  • You can set up a vacation message but let mail accumulate in your inbox. This is safe if you are checking messages or if you have very low email volume. Instructions are at: http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/docs/email-guide/email-guide.shtml#vm
  • You can forward your mail to another account. Instructions are at
    http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/docs/email-guide/email-guide.shtml#mf
Call the Help Desk at 610-758-4357 with any questions.

Changing the default sent folder that IMP uses
In most mail programs, your sent messages are stored in your home directory on the mail server in a folder called Sent. However, when you use the IMP web-based mail program, the default location for sent messages is a different folder called "sent-mail." This means if you want to access a message you sent via IMP, you must login to IMP. Most users would prefer all sent messages go to the Sent folder on the mail
server. Follow these steps to change the IMP default sent-mail folder to the Sent folder on the mail server. https://www.lehigh.edu/lts/teams/cbe/sentimp.htm

Bumping your quota: Live demo!
Nothing is more frustrating than losing email function when you're
working on a deadline. If the email problem is related to your mail
quota, there is an easy temporary fix that you can do yourself --bumping
your quota. To see a live demo of the bump quota feature, go to:
http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/docs/account/bumpquota/accountquota.html

Twenty-five years of the Web of Science now available
The Web of Science is a major library database that enables searching of scholarly literature across the sciences, social sciences, and humanities. It enables not only topic searching, but also "citation searching" for literature that cites an item of interest. The latter is a powerful way to develop a bibliography plus track who is citing one's own scholarly output. A ten-year backfile has been added so that our subscription now begins with 1983. Researchers will find more cites to earlyarticles, retrieve abstracts for much more of the early literature, and be able to link to even more full text. Available from the Database Finder (http://databases.lib.lehigh.edu/finder/)

Linderman Library closed May 10, 11
The Linderman Library will be closed to the public on May 10th and May 11th in order to complete final installations in advance of the dedication. Linderman books that must be obtained on those days can be retrieved by library staff. Please call or visit Fairchild Library to arrange for this.

Password changes // Microsoft Office 2007 upgrade timeline // Microsoft Office 2007 compatibility tool // Microsoft Office 2007 seminars // Web browsers: An eye toward greater readability // Linderman improvements continue

Password changes
For security purposes, Lehigh requires that users change their passwords every six months. Because users sometimes encounter login difficulties immediately after changing their passwords, review and follow these procedures to eliminate the most common causes of login failures. http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/docs/pswd/changepswd.htm

Microsoft Office 2007 upgrade timeline
Microsoft recently released Microsoft Office 2007 as an upgrade to Microsoft Office 2003. Unlike previous Microsoft Office upgrades, the new version has an entirely new interface and many new features. Library and Technology Services (LTS) is planning to upgrade the public computing sites to Office 2007 (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access) soon after final exams end in May. This means that Office 2003 will no longer be available in the public sites. The upgrade will be propagated to the public sites in late May and will be available for use in all public sites in early June. Library and Technology Services will upgrade faculty and staff computers one department at a time and on an as-needed basis. Student and faculty work at home media availability is unknown at this point but will be available for the fall semester.

Microsoft Office 2007 compatibility tool
The new version of Office 2007 saves files in a different format than Office 2003, causing compatibility problems with reading files in older versions of Office. For example, if a student saves a Microsoft Word document in Office 2007 and sends it to a professor who has Office 2003, the professor will NOT be able read the document. To resolve version incompatibilities, it is recommended that users download and install the Microsoft Office 2003 file compatibility tool located on the Install Software list or at the Office 2007 documentation webpage located at http://www.lehigh.edu/lts/comp/docs/office07/ Users with Office 2007 installed will have no problem opening files saved in Office 2003 format.

Microsoft Office 2007 seminars
The Office 2007 interface is significantly changed from previous versions. LTS is in the process of creating documentation explaining the basic differences in the interface http://www.lehigh.edu/lts/comp/docs/office07/ Free training seminars
will be offered in late April and early May that will explain the basic differences in the Microsoft Office interface (these seminars will be announced shortly on the LTS seminar web pages) https://cf1.cc.lehigh.edu/seminar/

Web browsers: an eye toward greater readability
Finally, relief for tired eyes! Both the IE 7 and the Mozilla browsers have "accessibility" features that benefit both the visually impaired and those of us who squint at our computer screens to read smaller text or text on a low contrast background. For info go to http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/docs/ie7/zoom.html

Linderman improvements continue
Some furniture deliveries, book and staff moves, equipment installations, and other final touches in Linderman Library continue. Thank you for your patience with these minor disruptions. Wireless access in some areas is not yet at full strength so work continues on that as well. Please enjoy the convenient cafe, group study rooms, and the opportunity to once more browse for books in the stacks!

Filtering spam out of your inbox // Windows Vista at Lehigh (current status // Search plugins in IE 7 and Mozilla Firefox 2 // Blackboard changes // Information Literacy Web site expanded // LTS Strategic Planning online // Technology, Teaching, and Learning surveys // The Digital Library turns to crime

Filtering spam out of your inbox
Spam has become a major issue over the last few years. In order to help combat the spread of spam, LTS has enabled spam tagging using a device called SpamAssassin. When mail arrives at Lehigh, SpamAssassin determines whether a message is most likely spam. If it is, the message is tagged [SPAM] in the subject heading and then you receive it in your Inbox. If you receive a lot of spam and find it a nuisance to sort through it among regular email, consider using a filter to move spam messages elsewhere for review and/or deletion. For instructions on creating a spam filter in Mozilla, see: http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/docs/mozilla/seminar.html#filter
For instructions on filtering in other email programs, contact your computing consultant.

Windows Vista at Lehigh (current status)
Microsoft Windows Vista was recently released to the general public and is now available when ordering a new computer. Lehigh Library and Technology Services (LTS) is currently testing Vista with many critical University systems such as the portal, E-mail, Banner as well as wired and wireless networking. At the present time, there are many software packages and systems that do not work with Vista including the Install Software, LDAP, LTS Print Select, legacy Pocket PC operating systems as
well as connectivity problems with wireless networking. Therefore, LTS does not currently recommend the purchase of Vista for use on campus. When applications work satisfactorily, LTS will change the recommended operating system from Windows XP to Vista. Until then, please order new computers with Windows XP unless there is a compelling reason not to do so. If you have questions, please contact the help desk at 8-HELP or your departmental computing consultant. For more information regardingVista at Lehigh or in general please visit: http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/docs/vista/index.html

Search plugins in IE 7 and Firefox 2
IE 7 and FireFox 2 both offer new ways to easily use your favorite search engines. You may have used Google or Yahoo search toolbars. Have you ever wished you could search your favorite database from a browser
toolbar? Go to http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/docs/ie7/searchplugins.htm to learn how you can customize your browser search box to include many search tools and library databases. NOTE: LIBRARY-SPONSORED LICENSED DATABASES WILL WORK ONLY ON CAMPUS.

Blackboard changes
In January of 2007, Blackboard, Lehigh s Course Management System was upgraded. This upgrade brought important changes to some of the components to
Blackboard. Here are some of the most important changes:Discussion Board Changes to this feature include built-in grading capabilities, participation statistics listed in the performance dashboard, moderated discussion managed by students as well as
instructors, save postings as a draft, receive email notice of new postings, availability options (like other Blackboard areas), rate postings - allows users to rate the postings of their peers on a scale of 1 to 5, and copy forums to a different discussion board. Email - There is now a spell checker for email messages!Teams and Journals are now named Wikis and Blogs, respectively. The Digital Dropbox has been replaced with Assignments, which is a much more flexible way to collect documents from students, download them all at the same time, and provide feedback along with a grade. For more information on these changes, please go to http://cf1.cc.lehigh.edu/itresource and click on the Blackboard tab.

Information literacy web site expanded
If you have not seen it recently, you will be pleasantly surprised by the new look and design of the LTS Navigating Information at Lehigh Web site http://www.lehigh.edu/library/infolit/. The new site was rolled out at the end of December 2006 and offers improved, much clearer organization and usability. Use it to find the information literacy tools created specifically for faculty and students, link to academic integrity materials, learn about the annual research skills assessment as well as the entire information literacy initiative championed by LTS. The site is best viewed in IE, Mozilla Firefox or the Mozilla SeaMonkey
browsers.

LTS Strategic plan online
LTS has recently updated its Strategic Plan for 2006-2010. It is publicly available at the following URL: http://www.lehigh.edu/ltsplan. Contact Sue Cady at sac0@lehigh.edu or x84645 if you have questions.

Technology, teaching, and learing surveys
As part of our Middle States accreditation process, faculty and students will be asked to complete a survey on technology, teaching and learning within the next few weeks. This is a crucial part of our accreditation process and will help set future directions for the use of academic technologies on our campus. When you receive your survey, please fill it out -- there will be a prize drawing!

The digital library turns to crime
LTS has unveiled its tenth project, Villainy Detected : Crime and Consequences in Britain and America in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries. Lillian De La Torre's 1947 Villainy Detected served as an inspiration for the project title; her work is an example of the fascination with 18th and 19th century crime and its consequences. The materials demonstrate the continuing appeal of these topics and those who wrote about them. During this period in America and Britain, prison
and judicial reform was debated while writers analyzed and sensationalized the criminal. The site presents a number of these writings, mostly from Lehigh s collections, along with related essays by five Lehigh University faculty: Rosemary Mundhenk, Jan Fergus, Ian Duffy, Roger Simon, and Monica Najar. The Web site URL is
http://digital.lib.lehigh.edu/crime/.
