LTS PUBLIC SITE UPGRADES SUMMER 2011
Upgrades are scheduled for LTS computing sites, classrooms and lecture halls across campus this summer. The public site upgrade schedule can be found here: http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/tims/facilities/sitenews.html

If you use computers at any of these sites, you will need to make alternative arrangements during the dates of the upgrades. If you are teaching and want to schedule a public computing site for a hands-on computing class, please note the dates listed under the heading “PC Computer Site Lifecycle Upgrades” on the above page.

If you are scheduling a classroom or lecture hall, please check with the Operational/Supplies Contact on this page for site scheduling: http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/tims/facilities/sitecontact.html, or the Registrar, if it is a Registrar’s room: http://www.lehigh.edu/~inrgs/main.shtml (click on Room Reservations under either the Faculty or Student portion of the sidebar on the Registrar’s website.)

Please note: LTS public sites at Rauch Business Center will probably not be available at all during summer sessions due to extensive construction in the building and LTS technology upgrades.

CAMPUS WIRELESS UPDATE
LTS plans to migrate all wireless users on campus away from the "LU" wireless network and onto the "LEHIGH" wireless network. If all goes well, this will be accomplished by the beginning of the fall 2011 semester. The “LEHIGH” network supports the current standards in WPA2 encryption and the faster 802.11n wireless connect speeds.

CONFIGURING AND USING REMOTE DESKTOP FOR WINDOWS PCs ON APPLE MOBILE DEVICES
Step 1: Enable remote access on the Windows computer you intend to remote into. The RDP Lite app, which you will need to install on your mobile device (see Step 3 below), only works with Windows computers running Windows 7, Vista or XP. (Home Editions of these operating systems are not supported.) To establish the remote connection, you will need to obtain the IP address of the remote computer. If you need assistance with the aforementioned or following procedures, please contact the computing consultant that supports your college or department.

Step 2: Install and configure the Lehigh SSLVPN on the mobile device using these directions (note that the complete path to the VPN connection on an iOS device is (Settings/General/Network/VPN): http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/docs/vpn/mobile-vpn.html. The VPN connection is set after you enter the required information. Click on the Network button in the upper left hand corner, then the General button on the next screen to get back out to the main settings window.

Step 3: Connect to the App Store on your device and download and install the free Remote Desktop Lite – RDP (MochaSoft) application on your Apple mobile device: http://www.mochasoft.dk/iphone_rdp.htm

Step 4: Each time you want to remote into the Windows PC, turn on the VPN connection on your Apple mobile device (iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch) via the path, Settings/General/Network/VPN.

Step 5: Next open the RDP Lite app to connect to the remote computer. For the initial connection to the remote computer, tap “Configure” and enter the IP address of your Windows computer. On subsequent connection attempts, simply tap “Connect”. You will see the stored IP address which you can then choose. When you are finished with the remote session, turn off the VPN via the path Settings/General/Network/VPN.

For remote into a Mac, there are other apps available such as Desktop Connect, a cross-platform remote desktop app for Windows, Mac OS and Linux.

PUBLIC PRINTING WITH A QUOTA AT LEHIGH
Following discussions with the Student Senate and Green Action Committee, LTS will be implementing a print quota of 750 prints per semester for students printing at any public site on campus. Printing will remain free.

The central goal in implementing print quotas is to reduce waste. LTS will be utilizing PaperCut as its print management solution. Further information about this initiative will be forthcoming. If you have a specific question about your quota, the staff at the Circulation desk in the libraries will be able to assist. More information about printing at Lehigh can be found here: http://www.lehigh.edu/print/

GOOGLE CALENDAR: NEW FEATURE!
Google recently announced that a much-requested feature is now available -- the ability to color code events. Calendars have always been color-coded, and calendar owners can change the color of a calendar. Now, the same functionality is available for events. The option is available under Event Details. You can see this feature in action at http://screencast.com/t/MQBl6SRkdX

LIBRARIES STUDENT RESEARCH PRIZE WINNERS NAMED!
LTS and the Friends of the Libraries offer congratulations to the co-recipients of the 2011 Libraries Student Research Prize: Virginia Nyikadzino, a senior in Civil and Environmental Engineering, and Emily Rojer, a senior in International Relations. On April 19th, President Alice Gast presented the Prize certificate and checks for $500 to Nyikadzino and Rojer at The Writing to Improve Learning at Lehigh (WILL) Colloquium.

The winning research papers emerged as the most outstanding submissions of a strong pool of over sixty papers and projects. The selection process included librarian analysis of the bibliographies, independent faculty review of the papers, and interviews with both the students and the professors sponsoring the research papers. The Prize will be offered annually, and papers completed in 2011 are eligible for 2012. For more information about the Prize winners, their papers, and the Prize, go to http://www.lehigh.edu/libprize/

MEET PICNIK FOR PHOTO EDITING
Recently Lehigh's Google Apps added a suite of new applications to include the offerings that are available from the consumer/commercial version of Google Apps. One great new app is Picnik, a photo/image editing tool that is available anywhere you can log into Lehigh Google Apps. The easy menu-driven interface will appeal to novices, and the advanced feature set is pretty impressive.

Among the options for photo-editing are:

  • Rotate, crop, resize, sharpen
  • Save as jpg, png, bmp, gif, tiff, and pdf
  • Auto-color adjustment and auto-exposure adjustments (as well as expert/manual fine-tuning)
  • Facial touch-up such as blemish fix, teeth whitener, and redeye reduction
  • You can upload a local image for editing and save the edited image back to your local drive, OR you can edit images stored on sites such as Flickr, Facebook, Picasa, and Photobucket
  • Insert text and clip-art (called "stickers" in Picnik)
  • Effects such as black and white, sepia, soften, matte, texture, sketch, pixelate, posterize, etc.

Some caveats:
  • Some features are PREMIUM features not available in the free version (all features listed above are free).
  • Connect to and edit images stored locally or on sites such as Flickr, the free version of Picnik will only store five photos.
  • Any/all data stored on Lehigh Google Apps will be deleted if/when you leave Lehigh -- make sure you save or transfer images and other data prior to your departure!

To access Picnik:
  1. Go to Lehigh Google Apps http://www.lehigh.edu/google
  2. Log into any service (Sites, Docs, etc.) with your Lehigh username/password
  3. Select More from the navigation menu at the top of the screen
  4. Select Even more
  5. Select Picnik from the resulting list of software options

If you have questions about Picnik and other Lehigh Google Apps, contact the Help Desk helpdesk@lehigh.edu or 610-758-4357.

GOOGLE DOCS ADDS DISCUSSIONS FEATURE
Google Docs facilitates collaborative writing by allowing many people to edit and contribute to a document's content. Have you ever found yourself editing the same section of a document as one of your collaborators? Now it's easy to communicate with them! The discussions feature is enabled in any document created on or after March 16. Just look for the "Discussions" link in the upper right-hand corner and select "Show Discussions" to see any previous posts from collaborators and add your own posts. Discussions permit you to mark target comments to a particular collaborator, and it's integrated with email. Individual comments can be marked "resolved" as needed. For more information, see http://googledocs.blogspot.com/2011/03/introducing-discussions-in-google-docs.html

PALCI EZ-BORROW HAS GOTTEN EZ-ER
If you have used the PALCI EZ-Borrow Interlibrary Loan System recently, you may have noticed it has a new and improved interface. The new Relais interface replaces the older ‘URSA’ interface. Some key advantages of the new interface include more streamlined (and faster) searching, advanced search features, better and condensed search results, and improved search retrieval time. All the PALCI libraries are searched at once rather than being divided into search groups as they were previously. The search results are more relevant and you now have the option of sorting by relevance, title, or publication date. You will also see item availability upfront, including if it's available at Lehigh. If Lehigh owns the book, you will be given a link to ‘transfer’ to ASA to continue your search there. Additionally, if a book is not available through PALCI EZ-Borrow, you will be given the option to request the title via ILLiad, where the ILLiad form will be auto-filled from the PALCI EZ-Borrow system.

Any questions or comments regarding PALCI EZ-Borrow may be sent to your subject librarian or to the Help Desk helpdesk@lehigh.edu or 610-758-4357.

WIRELESS ACCESS FOR GUESTS
Many departments or staff/faculty bring visitors on campus, such as vendors or colleagues from other universities. LTS now offers an easy way to obtain a temporary (seven-day) guest account for wireless access and use of public site computers. For more information, go to http://www.lehigh.edu/wireless/guest.shtml

RELOCATION OR DISPOSAL OF LEHIGH-OWNED COMPUTER EQUIPMENT
Lehigh-owned computers no longer in use can be: (1) relocated within a college or department; (2) sold or donated either at Lehigh or off-campus; or (3) offered for disposal. Please follow the Computer Disposal Procedures for additional direction.

To comply with Lehigh’s software licensing guidelines, and to ensure that no confidential data is visible or would be able to be restored, the Hard Drive Erasure Utility procedure link from the above web page must be followed for relocation or disposal.

CUSTOMIZING THE WINDOWS 7 TASKBAR
Preview the desktop with Aero Peek: To quickly show the desktop when you have multiple windows open, move your mouse pointer to the Show Desktop button at the right end of the taskbar (to the right of the date and time). The windows you have open will minimize. Click on the Show Desktop button to maximize the windows again. To see the desktop icons on top of applications you have open, add the Desktop toolbar. Right click in a blank area on the taskbar and click on Toolbars and then Desktop. To see your desktop icons, click on the double right-pointing arrows next to the Desktop toolbar which now appears on the right of your taskbar.

To change how programs and buttons appear on the taskbar:
Open Taskbar and Start Menu properties by right-clicking on a blank space on the taskbar. Then click on Properties. In the taskbar tab window, select one of the options from the Taskbar buttons list:
Always combine, hide labels: default setting – each program appears as a single, unlabeled button even when multiple windows for a program are open. A single button represents both a program and open windows.
Combine when taskbar is full: shows each window as an individual, labeled button. Collapses multiple single windows into a single program button when taskbar becomes crowded.
Never combine: shows each window as an individual, labeled button, but buttons never collapse into a single button. Buttons decrease in size and eventually scroll within the taskbar as more and more windows are opened.

And more! For more information about wireless services at Lehigh, contact the help desk at 8-4357.

SAGES OF THE PAGES
The Library recently launched a new blog called Sages of the Pages. The blog was named by Tina Hertel, the winner of our Name the Blog Contest. It was designed by Mark Canney and Rob Weidman, and highlights portions of the illuminated manuscripts in our Special Collection. Sages of the Pages will be updated weekly and will feature posts written by library staff on a wide variety of topics that relate to the Lehigh community. We'd love to hear your opinion of our blog and we would especially like suggestions for future topics.

THE NEW LEHIGH VPN
During the past two months, users have been migrating from the old Lehigh VPN (vpn.lehigh.edu) to a more secure VPN (sslvpn.lehigh.edu). As of March 1, 2011, the old Lehigh VPN will be officially taken out of service at which time all users must be migrated. Documentation for installing and using the new VPN can be viewed at: http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/docs/vpn. Installation and usage questions should be directed to the help desk at 8-4357.

SPAMASSASSIN: HOW WHITELISTING WORKS, AND WHY IT DOESN’T SOMETIMES
Whitelisting is a setting in SpamAssassin (Lehigh's SPAM filtering software) to override the SPAM filter mechanism. When a legitimate e-mail message is incorrectly tagged as SPAM, you can whitelist that e-mail address so that it will not be tagged again see http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/faq/qa/spamassassin.html for details.

How does whitelisting work?

SpamAssassin evaluates each e-mail message for certain conditions/attributes that are common in SPAM messages, and it assigns a numerical score for each attribute. By default, a score higher than +5 causes a message to be tagged as SPAM. When you whitelist an e-mail address, SpamAssassin sets the "score" for messages from that e-mail address to -100. This makes it highly unlikely a message from a whitelisted e-mail address will be tagged as SPAM.

There is one big exception though. If the e-mail message has multiple recipients -- the mail is sent to you and several others -- SpamAssassin will revert to its default SPAM filter settings. If the e-mail's SPAM score is 5 or over, it will be tagged as SPAM.

If you have questions about SpamAssassin or how it works, contact the help desk at 8-4357.

FAST AND EASY SCANNING WITH YOUR CELL PHONE
Many people that come to the Help Desk need to scan documents on our flatbed scanners. You may not need a flatbed scanner or photocopy scanner for small scanning jobs like driver's licenses, insurance forms, one page forms, etc. Use your smartphone or mobile device instead.

First, check to see if your cell phone or mobile device has a digital camera. These are often capable of capturing document images suitable for general use. If you do, then it's an easy process:

1. Use your smartphone to take the picture of your document.

2. Share the picture using whatever method your phone supports. For example:

  • Open your e-mail app and send the photo as an e-mail attachment.
  • Upload it to a photo web site such as Flickr or Picasa (make sure to mark sensitive docs as private).

3. Connect your phone to your computer and upload it to your local hard drive.

Here are some tips for using your camera to capture document images:

  • Check your phone’s camera settings for a "macro" or "document" mode, and use it if available. Also make sure that the camera's autofocus setting is on. Macro/document mode is particularly important for scanning smaller documents like letter-size pieces of paper or business cards.
  • If you don't have macro/document mode, make sure the camera is set to its highest resolution. This will generate the largest image.
  • Turn off your flash. Flashes tend to reflect harshly off of white surfaces like paper. The result is a washed-out image.
  • Find the best lighting. Since you can't use a flash, the document needs to have ample natural light. Position the document near a window or directly under a lamp.
  • Try to fill the camera frame with as much of the document as possible. If you're photographing a business card, you'll need to get in nice and close so that the card fills almost the entire screen.
  • For letter-size pieces of paper and business cards, you may want to rotate your camera 90 degrees so that the document fills even more of the screen.

For assistance in scanning docs with your cell phone, contact the help desk at 8-4357.

FOOTPRINTS SELF-SERVICE SYSTEM (FPSS) AT LEHIGH
The Footprints Self-Service System is a work order submission system for faculty and staff to request help through the Library and Technology Services (LTS) Footprints tracking system. It allows end-users to request help directly from the LTS component that supports the technology or service they need.

Advantages to using this system are:

  • The request is directed at once to the relevant component of LTS.
  • The request is entered into the tracking system. There is a record of the request that will not get deleted accidentally as an individual e-mail or voicemail message might.
  • The system generates multiple e-mail and system message reminders to the person to whom the request is directed. LTS staff will redirect the request if they are not the appropriate person to handle the problem.
  • Problem patterns may quickly identify a systemic issue for resolution for multiple users.
  • Solutions are documented in a knowledge base which enables staff to quickly resolve the same problem in the future.

To access the system, please navigate to the following web page and follow the instructions for requesting help: www.lehigh.edu/help.

LEHIGH UNIVERSITY DIGITAL DROPBOX SERVICE
The Lehigh University Digital Dropbox Service is a technology that enables sharing of large files between Lehigh University colleagues and outside users. It is a web-based service and therefore can be accessed from any computer with internet access.

Reasons to use the Lehigh Dropbox service:

  • Solution to e-mail quota issues and long file downloads. Share larger files with colleagues and retrieve them faster
  • Share files with Lehigh colleagues on and off campus
  • Share files with outside colleagues and collaborators and they can reciprocate

The drop box has three days for file pick-up before it is purged from the system. Files are not scanned for viruses so verify with the sender, if you did not previously agree to this, before opening and downloading the drop off files. Access to the Lehigh Dropbox Service is at: https://dropbox.lehigh.edu/dropbox/. Click on the “About the Dropbox” link on the web page above for detailed information on the dropbox service.

FRIENDS PROGRAM – TRAVEL: TRAVAILS, TREASURES, AND TOKENS – MARCH 15TH
What was travel really like? And what did it involve?

David Szewczyk, Philadelphia Rare Books & Manuscripts Company, LLC
Noon, Tuesday, March 15th
Scheler Humanities Forum, (Linderman Library 200)

In the 19th-century, travel accounts served as a form of acceptable “escape literature.” Mr. Szewczyk will explore how readers were transported to remote parts of the world where they learned about new cultures and made new discoveries. When read today, these narratives provide readers with a look at the recent past. Often readers of these classic accounts relish looking back towards a time that is often perceived as a “golden age.” Travel was fun, and hitherto unexplored areas were unsullied, new cuisines awaited, exotic languages filled the ears, and new things were to be found. Unimagined flora and fauna beckoned. Sponsored by Friends of the Lehigh University Libraries. Call 610-758-3039 for more information.

This lecture is planned in conjunction with the current Special Collections exhibit “The American Environment through Travelers’ Eyes.” The exhibit, which follows on the heels of “Environmental STEPS: Environmental Education and Action at Lehigh”, is part of a celebration of library resources in environmental history planned to commemorate the opening of the new STEPS building. The exhibit will be on display in Linderman Library through July 1, 2011.

NEW COMPUTER VIRUS TYPE: SCAREWARE IS PROLIFERATING -- PROTECT YOUR PC WITH ADBLOCK PLUS
A new type of computer virus has been rapidly proliferating to PCs. Known as scareware; these viruses overwhelm the user with numerous fraudulent error messages such as “Computer Virus Found”, “Registry Corruption Detected”, and “Hard Drive Failure”. Scareware will also disrupt Internet connectivity and crash various programs in an effort to deceive the user into believing a true problem exists. Conveniently, pop-up screens soon appear offering a seemingly legitimate cleanup utility program for purchase. Individuals who are duped into purchasing the program unknowingly expose their credit card information to criminal elements risking fraud and identity theft.

Lehigh University faced a tremendous uptick in these attacks during calendar year 2010. According to LTS Client Services statistics, there were 234 instances of virus infections requiring complete computer re-imaging; this represents a 344% increase from the prior year.

There are several steps you can take to reduce the likelihood of falling victim to computer viruses. First, ensure your Windows PC is up-to-date with the latest security patches by visiting http://update.microsoft.com. Second, avoid using Microsoft Internet Explorer unless required. LTS recommends using the Mozilla Firefox web browser. Lastly, install the Adblock Plus plug-in to Mozilla Firefox by visiting http://www.lehigh.edu/act/adblockplus. Adblock Plus will shield you from websites known to harbor computer viruses and other security threats.

PREPARING TO TEACH WITH CLASSROOM TECHNOLOGY AT LEHIGH
-- Review and test the technology in your classroom before the first class; ask one of your technology support team members (Instructional Technology Consultant or Computing Consultant) to review the technology with you. You may also call the Media Center if you’d like an on-site orientation to your classroom.

-- Try to get into your assigned classrooms some time before the start of a new semester, to familiarize yourself with the technology in the rooms, as each room may be a little different. You can find a photograph and instructions for your classrooms here: http://mediaclassrooms.web.lehigh.edu/public/sites.php. Click your building, then your room.

-- If you are using a laptop and need LAN/internet access, bring an Ethernet cable with you. The current standard for connecting a laptop to a presentation system is via a provided 15 pin male VGA cable. You should provide any adapters you might need to attach your laptop to this cable type. A detailed discussion on connecting laptops to projectors can be found here: http://llnotes.web.lehigh.edu/article.php?id=30.

-- If you are using technology to connect to remote users (students or guest speakers) and are unsure of the hardware/software setup you need, please consult with your Instructional Technology Consultant or Computing Consultant a few days in advance of the class.

-- Experiencing problems during class with the computer, projection system or other classroom technology? Please call the Help Desk (x8-4357) to report the problem. You might also want to read this article on some things you can try when you experience problems in a classroom (best read before things go wrong): http://llnotes.web.lehigh.edu/article.php?id=141.

NEW VIRTUAL PRIVATE NETWORK (VPN) AT LEHIGH
Lehigh clients have been using a VPN (vpn.lehigh.edu) for years to securely access campus resources from home, on the road and other remote locations. The current VPN setup at Lehigh enables users to connect to the Lehigh network from a remote computer through the use of a built-in VPN client that is part of the Windows Operating System or Macintosh and Linux. As of February 1, 2011, this VPN (vpn.lehigh.edu) will be taken out of service and all users must migrate to a new SSLVPN (sslvpn.lehigh.edu). Documentation on how to install and use the new SSLVPN client employing split tunneling can be seen at: http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/docs/vpn. Please note that the new VPN will not automatically map network drives (as the former client did). Easy and convenient drive mapping utilities for Mac and Windows will be available when the new VPN goes live.

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a computer network that uses the internet to provide remote users or offices secure access to an organization’s network. Using VPN software from off campus allows a user to access the resources of Lehigh’s local network such as the user’s H: drive or the departmental I: drive. This access is possible because VPN software places the user’s computer directly on Lehigh’s network; the computer appears to be on campus.

VPNs also have the added benefit of using a secure tunneling protocol. This protocol prevents other users on the internet from accessing data that is transmitted back and forth from a client computer to a private network (such as Lehigh’s network). There are two methods of routing traffic though the Lehigh network using the VPN. One is to allow all traffic to pass through Lehigh’s network tunnel. The second is called split tunneling; only Lehigh traffic passes through the tunnel, while other traffic such as web browsing or viewing videos on YouTube goes through the user’s home internet service provider. Split tunneling identifies the resource a user wants to access and directs its network traffic accordingly. For example, the user who needs access to a departmental LAN drive would be directed through the private network; the user accessing Amazon.com would be directed outside the private network. Split tunneling minimizes the VPN-originated traffic on Lehigh’s internal networks.

WHY THE H: DRIVE IS YOUR FRIEND
The H: drive is a network drive that faculty, staff, and students can access from departmental (and often personal) computers. There are numerous reasons to use the H: drive rather than your local hard disk when storing files.

-- The H: drive now has a storage capacity of 1 gigabyte (increased from 500 MB last year). The H: drive is backed up nightly and scanned for viruses.

-- The Shadow Copy function http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/docs/shadow/copy.html is great for restoring files that have been corrupted, that have lost content, or that have been mistakenly deleted.

-- The H: drive can be accessed from home or while traveling (using the Lehigh VPN and drive mapping utilities). Note that other options may work better for you depending on your data and your needs.

-- Your H: drive files are private (only you can access them), BUT if you want to share a file with staff or students, you can place it in your H: drive Public folder. Files in your Public folder can be accessed by others at Lehigh.

If you have questions about using your H: drive, contact your computing consultant or the help desk at (x8-4357).

LIBRARY OPENS FIRST EXHIBIT OF 2011
“The American Environment through Travelers’ Eyes”, the new Linderman Library exhibit, opens on February 9, 2011. The exhibit, which follows on the heels of “Environmental STEPS: Environmental Education and Action at Lehigh”, is part of a celebration of library resources in environmental history planned to commemorate the opening of the new STEPS building.

The exhibit, which is on display throughout Linderman, features travel associated with specific modes of transportation, such as the automobile, trains, and ships in the CafĂ© Gallery. Exhibition space on the first floor displays important works in both North and South American travel. The Bayer Galleria on the third floor will display examples of travel undertaken by Lehigh faculty, staff, and students. Material will detail educational field trips, as well as travel motivated by scientific exploration and discovery. Please also visit the Parents’ Gallery on the fourth floor to view a selection of contemporary works.
