LTS PUBLIC SITE UPGRADES SUMMER 2011
Upgrades are scheduled for LTS computing sites, classrooms and lecture halls across campus this summer. The public site upgrade schedule can be found here: http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/tims/facilities/sitenews.html

If you use computers at any of these sites, you will need to make alternative arrangements during the dates of the upgrades. If you are teaching and want to schedule a public computing site for a hands-on computing class, please note the dates listed under the heading “PC Computer Site Lifecycle Upgrades” on the above page.

If you are scheduling a classroom or lecture hall, please check with the Operational/Supplies Contact on this page for site scheduling: http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/tims/facilities/sitecontact.html, or the Registrar, if it is a Registrar’s room: http://www.lehigh.edu/~inrgs/main.shtml (click on Room Reservations under either the Faculty or Student portion of the sidebar on the Registrar’s website.)

Please note: LTS public sites at Rauch Business Center will probably not be available at all during summer sessions due to extensive construction in the building and LTS technology upgrades.

CAMPUS WIRELESS UPDATE
LTS plans to migrate all wireless users on campus away from the "LU" wireless network and onto the "LEHIGH" wireless network. If all goes well, this will be accomplished by the beginning of the fall 2011 semester. The “LEHIGH” network supports the current standards in WPA2 encryption and the faster 802.11n wireless connect speeds.

CONFIGURING AND USING REMOTE DESKTOP FOR WINDOWS PCs ON APPLE MOBILE DEVICES
Step 1: Enable remote access on the Windows computer you intend to remote into. The RDP Lite app, which you will need to install on your mobile device (see Step 3 below), only works with Windows computers running Windows 7, Vista or XP. (Home Editions of these operating systems are not supported.) To establish the remote connection, you will need to obtain the IP address of the remote computer. If you need assistance with the aforementioned or following procedures, please contact the computing consultant that supports your college or department.

Step 2: Install and configure the Lehigh SSLVPN on the mobile device using these directions (note that the complete path to the VPN connection on an iOS device is (Settings/General/Network/VPN): http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/docs/vpn/mobile-vpn.html. The VPN connection is set after you enter the required information. Click on the Network button in the upper left hand corner, then the General button on the next screen to get back out to the main settings window.

Step 3: Connect to the App Store on your device and download and install the free Remote Desktop Lite – RDP (MochaSoft) application on your Apple mobile device: http://www.mochasoft.dk/iphone_rdp.htm

Step 4: Each time you want to remote into the Windows PC, turn on the VPN connection on your Apple mobile device (iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch) via the path, Settings/General/Network/VPN.

Step 5: Next open the RDP Lite app to connect to the remote computer. For the initial connection to the remote computer, tap “Configure” and enter the IP address of your Windows computer. On subsequent connection attempts, simply tap “Connect”. You will see the stored IP address which you can then choose. When you are finished with the remote session, turn off the VPN via the path Settings/General/Network/VPN.

For remote into a Mac, there are other apps available such as Desktop Connect, a cross-platform remote desktop app for Windows, Mac OS and Linux.

PUBLIC PRINTING WITH A QUOTA AT LEHIGH
Following discussions with the Student Senate and Green Action Committee, LTS will be implementing a print quota of 750 prints per semester for students printing at any public site on campus. Printing will remain free.

The central goal in implementing print quotas is to reduce waste. LTS will be utilizing PaperCut as its print management solution. Further information about this initiative will be forthcoming. If you have a specific question about your quota, the staff at the Circulation desk in the libraries will be able to assist. More information about printing at Lehigh can be found here: http://www.lehigh.edu/print/

GOOGLE CALENDAR: NEW FEATURE!
Google recently announced that a much-requested feature is now available -- the ability to color code events. Calendars have always been color-coded, and calendar owners can change the color of a calendar. Now, the same functionality is available for events. The option is available under Event Details. You can see this feature in action at http://screencast.com/t/MQBl6SRkdX
