NEW FORMATTING OPTION FOR LEHIGH NEWS DIGESTS
If you subscribe to Lehigh's daily news digest, you can now receive itin HTML format. Instead of having to scroll through the entire list of news items, you can click a link to jump forward to only those items of interest to you. To receive the new format, go to the Account Maintenance page http://www.lehigh.edu/account and select NEWS Digests. At the bottom of the page, there is an option "Receive in HTML format." Choose Yes, then click the Update Subscriptions button.



INTERNET EXPLORER 7: IMPORTANT NOTICE
Microsoft has released its new Web browser Internet Explorer 7 (IE 7). If you have Automatic Updates turned on in Windows, you will be prompted to install IE 7 some time after November 1, 2006. Please note: IE 7 is not yet recommended for use at Lehigh. At this time IE 7 has not been tested or certified for use with Lehigh's systems and services, and critical services such as Banner, Blackboard, library online services, and the portal may not work as expected. To ensure that end-of-semester activities go smoothly, LTS recommends that staff and faculty DELAY installing IE 7 until testing is completed.

LTS will temporarily delay the Microsoft Automatic Update for IE 7 for most on-campus computers. Lehigh faculty and staff who want to install IE 7 manually can do so, but campus systems/services may not work as expected. In January 2007, IE 7 will be made available through Microsoft Automatic Updates and installed at public sites.

We appreciate your understanding as we strive to standardize and streamline Lehigh's systems and services. The IE automatic update is blocked for all computers in active directory, which is most Lehigh owned computers. Exceptions include residence hall student-owned computers and some special cases.

HOW TO UNINSTALL INTERNET EXPLORER 7:
To uninstall Internet Explorer 7 and restore Internet Explorer 6 when using Windows XP or Windows Server 2003:

1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
2. Click Add or Remove Programs.
3. Scroll down to Windows Internet Explorer 7, click it, and then click Change/Remove.



HOMELAND SECURITY DATABASE
LTS is providing access through our Database Finder page to a new database, the Homeland Security Digital Library, which is co-sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Office of Grants and Training and the Naval Postgraduate School Center for Homeland Defense and Security. This database offers quick access to important U.S. policy documents, presidential directives, and national strategy documents as well as specialized resources such as theses and reports from various universities, organizations and local and state agencies. The resources are reviewed, selected and organized by a team of homeland security researchers and the HSDL is currently offered only to federal, state and local government officials, research institutions, and the U. S. Military. Material is updated daily and coverage generally extends back to 2002, however older materials will be included if they are pertinent. Topics range from Borders and Immigration, Civil Liberties, Public Health, Intelligence Issues,Weapons, to Terrorism.

ASSISTIVE PHONE TECHNOLOGIES

ENCRYPTING PORTABLE DATA STORAGE DEVICES
As portable data storage devices (such as USB memory keys and hard drives) become cheaper, smaller and more widely available, the importance of securing data stored on these devices becomes a necessity. USB memory keys are now available in gigabyte capacities as compared to megabytes just a few years ago and USB hard drives are now
available in hundreds of gigabytes instead of ten or twenty. This means that data in general is becoming more mobile and more concealable. For example, a staff member can now copy a gigabyte database file containing personal student information of the entire student population to a USB memory key and slip it in his/her pocket and take it on a business trip or home. What happens if the staff member accidentally drops the key or it falls from a pocket? What happens if the data falls into the hands
of individuals looking to capitalize on identity theft? This could be disastrous for the University, the students and staff members involved.

LTS is recommending that sensitive data being stored on portable devices, such as memory keys and portable hard drives, be encrypted using a simple open source software package named TrueCrypt. TrueCrypt can be downloaded for free and configured so individuals can encrypt data stored on external storage devices. TrueCrypt is required on all computers from which a TrueCrypt volume will be accessed and used. Instructions for installing and using TrueCrypt may be found at:

Lehigh's Digital Beer Cellar Now Open
September marked the launch of the Lehigh Digital Library's newest project, The Vault at Pffaff's: An Archive of Art and Literature by NewYork City's Nineteenth-Century Bohemians. The site is devoted to presenting the poetry, drama, art, fiction and social commentary of the group of nineteenth-century bohemians who frequented Charles Pfaff's beer cellar in lower Manhattan. These creative and unconventional
individuals include the likes of Walt Whitman, poet and actress Adah Isaacs Menken, journalist and social critic Henry Clapp, playwright John Brougham, and artist Elihu Vedder. Interested in joining us for a toast? There's no need to reserve a table. Located at http://digital.lib.lehigh.edu/pfaffs/

JSTOR BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES COLLECTION Lehigh now has access to JSTOR's Biological Sciences collection. The JSTOR initiative provides backfile coverage for a large number of scholarly journals. The biology collection supplements Lehigh's already extensive JSTOR coverage, which includes Arts and Sciences collections and a Health and General Sciences collection. According to JSTOR, by 2007 the Biological Sciences collection will have one hundred or more titles. As they appear, the journals will be included in the ASA catalog and in the Electronic Journals list. A list of the currently available journals in this JSTOR collection is at:

EXPANSION OF REFERENCE WORKS ONLINE
In ur attempt to continually meet user needs Library & Technology Services has added several full text online reference works: titles created from the Oxford University Press award-winning print scholarly reference sets plus two technical encyclopedias from Wiley. These e-reference resources are fully searchable with remote access available anytime, anywhere to Lehigh patrons. Examples include

GOOGLE'S NEW CALENDAR FEATURE
Google's gmail has been a popular Webmail service because it provides 2.5 gigabytes of disk space for email (note: it is not backed up!). Recently, Google has introduced new FREE tools available to gmail account holders, including full-featured calendar, spreadsheet and word processing software, photo albums, maps and I/M talk. These tools offer support for collaboration and sharing. LTS is testing the new Google tools and has done some test-migrations of portal calendar events into Gmail with success. REQUESTING LINDERMAN MATERIALS DURING THE RENOVATION
Most of the Linderman Library collection has been moved offsite during
the building renovation. Items with Linderman locations in the ASA catalog are housed at the Library Materials Center (LMC) and other remote storage sites. Users may place requests via the Request Form for Linderman/LMC Storage Item.

Requested material is retrieved on a 24-hour notice weekday delivery. Some materials do not circulate and must be used in-house or in Special Collections. You will be notified if that is the case. Otherwise, you will receive an email notice when your item is available for checkout or pickup at the Circulation Desk. Another option for Lehigh users is to consult materials at the Library Materials Center. Contact inaccess@lehigh.edu or 610-758-4694 to schedule a visit.

NEW COPIERS - LOWER PRICES: BUY A COPY CARD TODAY!
New Ricoh digital photocopiers were installed over the summer on the first and second floors of the Fairchild-Martindale Library. The new copiers are easy to use and make great copies for a reduced cost. Previously the cost of a single copy made with a GoldPlus card was 13 and coin-op copies were priced at 15 per page. Due to negotiated reductions in price plus a subsidy provided by LTS, the new cost will be 5 per page!

The new photocopy machines do not support GoldPlus readers, instead they
work with a set value copy card. These new cards are available for purchase at the Fairchild-Martindale Library Circulation Desk for $5.00 and $25.00. Each card has a one time purchase cost of $1.00. The $5.00 card will cost $1.00 for the card and the remaining $4.00 value will make 80 copies and the $25.00 card will cost $1.00 for the card and the remaining $24.00 value will make 480 copies. When the copy card value is depleted bring it to the Circulation Desk and any amount of value can be purchased and added to the card. Copy cards can be purchased by charging the cost to a GoldPlus account, a personal, research, or departmental bursar account, or paid for with cash.

ACCESS EXPANDED FOR DISSERTATIONS IN THE HUMANITIES
Humanities and social sciences dissertations, from institutions in the U.S. and other countries, are now available in our virtual library and accessible online on and off campus. This means that when you are searching ProQuest Dissertations and Theses and find a dissertation from another institution of interest to you, you may receive free and immediate online delivery of the full-text of that dissertation. All social sciences and humanities dissertations, including education from 1997, to present are available for digital delivery; for some institutions a larger back file is accessible. To download the dissertations, simply click on the PDF icon displayed in the abstract view. Wish to try out this expanded access to dissertations? or add ProQuest Dissertations and Theses to your research databases view in your MyLibrary in the Campus Portal. Click on EDIT and then select ProQuest Dissertations and Theses if the database is not already showing in your research databases list.

To take advantage of the ProQuest search interface features, including an ALERTS service, click on the abstract view to show the metadata for a "more like this" search to find dissertations on the same topic, directed by the same advisor, completed at the same institution, etc.



HISTORICAL STATISTICS OF THE UNITED STATES
A major reference work published in 1949, 1960 and 1975 by the U.S. Bureau of the Census has recently (2006) been updated by Cambridge University Press in a monumental expansion containing 3 times more data than the earlier editions. The Millennial Online edition acquired by LTS makes this extensive source of quantitative data available in downloadable and customizable form. Researchers in the social, behavioral, humanistic and natural sciences who need U.S. statistics on topics as diverse as economics and trade, history, climate, demographics, education, government, finance, law, natural resources, business, religion, migration and sociology will find data organized and contextualized by experts in the field. H: DRIVE SPACE INCREASED TO 500 MEGABYTES
In the past faculty, staff and students were given a file space
allocation of 350 megabytes on the Home server, represented by the LAN
drive letter "H". This space allocation has recently been increased to
500 megabytes. Saving files on the H: drive carries three great benefits:

1. Files are stored in a remote location, backed up nightly, and can be
recovered if you accidentally delete a file.

2. Files are available from any networked computer on campus. You can
edit a file at one location and open it at another. No disks or thumb
drives to carry!

3. All files are scanned nightly for viruses.

LTS encourages you to use your H: drive. Someday, you may be glad you did!

On Friday, April 21st the university community can learn how High Performance Computing (HPC) at Lehigh can accelerate scientific and engineering computations. World-renowned computer expert, Professor Miron Livny, from the University ofWisconsin Madison, will speak on how access to worldwide computing resources will change the world of research in his talk, "The Democratization of Computing". In addition, Lehigh University faculty members will describe some of their research

MAIL QUOTA INCREASED FOR STUDENTS, FACULTY, STAFF
Recently, the mail quotas for many accounts were substantially increased. Quotas are the limits on how much disk space users have at Lehigh. The space for Inboxes has not changed, but the space for creating folders and managing mail has now doubled, for those whose quotas were at the old minimums. The increases mean that the new minimum
quotas for mail folder space are now 40 megabytes for undergraduates and 80 megabytes for faculty, staff, and graduate students. This does not mean that users can turn off spam filters and skip basic housekeeping activities, like deleting old messages and emptying trash; however, it will make daily mail management easier. Users whopreviously had their Inbox moved from the mail spool to the mail folder space will still maintain the higher net quota of the two areas. LIBRARY ELECTRONIC RESOURCES - NO ROBOTS, PLEASE
Lehigh faculty, staff, and students enjoy convenient online access to an extensive collection of library electronic resources. While LTS encourages and actively promotes the use of these electronic journals and databases, there are limits in our licensing agreements. Systematic downloading of large portions of a database or journal is prohibited, as is commercial use. The use of harvesting software, such as scripts, agents, or robots, is generally prohibited and can result in the loss of
access to these resources for the entire Lehigh University community.



WHAT'S ON THE HORIZON? WINDOWS VISTA
Windows VISTA, Microsoft's new operating system (slated to replace Windows XP) is reportedly going to be released in early 2007. LTS staff have obtained a beta version of Vista and are currently testing it. Windows VISTA has many new features such as an updated graphical user interface called Aero, improved searching, a number of new security features, and completely new networking, audio, print, and display engines.

How can we plan for Vista at Lehigh? According to LTS Scientific and Desktop Computing Team Leader Gale Fritsche, departments contemplating new computer purchases should look for machines with at least one gigabyte of memory. As the year progresses LTS will continue to inform staff of the timeline for review and implementation of Vista.**



CAMPUS EVENT PLANNING: EMAIL FOR VISITORS
Lehigh visitors often want to check their email or do basic computing while on campus. LTS has secured its wireless and wired network to limit access to those with a Lehigh username and password. The library research stations can be used only for database searching -- they do not permit email access or Internet searching. If you want visitors to have temporary access to the Lehigh network to check email or perform other basic computing tasks, it must be arranged in advance. Contact Margaret

*WINDOWS TIP: ALPHABETIZE THE START MENU FOR EASE OF USE*
With a fresh installation of Windows XP, all of your programs appear in the Start Menu alphabetically. But as you install new programs, they are added at the bottom of the list. To reorganize the list alphabetically, click Start > All Programs (or Start > Programs, if you use the Classic menu view). Right-click any program in the list, then click "Sort by Name." This will sort your program groups first, then singular programs at the bottom, in alphabetical order.
