WINDOWS 7 - ON THE HORIZON
The official release of Microsoft’s Windows 7 is scheduled for October 22, 2009: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/default.aspx. The Library and Technology Services staff has been testing the operating system with Lehigh’s existing applications to identify potential incompatibilities. As with most upgrades, the conversion process to a new desktop operating system is challenging and time-consuming. Therefore, over the next several weeks extensive testing will take place within LTS so that we can be prepared as best we can. Please stay tuned for updates in the coming weeks on the plans for Windows 7 at Lehigh.



THE HUB ON THE CAMPUS PORTAL
Student Affairs is sponsoring a new service -- The Hub -- which is now available on the campus portal (see icon on upper right corner). The Hub is a social networking resource student clubs and campus involvement opportunities. The Hub is described in more detail in a recent Brown and White article "Lehigh joins Hub Club" (9/08/09). Staff and faculty can access and peruse The Hub, which includes listings of clubs and members, an events calendar, and more. WINDOWS AND MAC TIPS
Do you need to resize text in a window without having to change your screen resolution and affecting everything else that is open?

To Increase the font size:

• On a PC, hold down control and shift keys, and tap the + key until the window is the size that you want.
  
• On a Mac, hold down the command and shift keys, and tap the + key until the window is the size that you want.

To Decrease the font size:

• On a PC, hold down control key and tap the – key until the window is the size that you want.
  
• On a Mac, hold down the command key and tap the – key until the window is the size that you want.

Do you need a quick way to minimize all open windows so you can see your desktop?

• On a PC, hold down the Windows key and hit M.
  
• On a Mac in Finder, hold down the Option and Command keys and hit H (it minimizes all windows except the app you are in) or use Expose.

Do you need a quick way to copy files while dragging them between open windows?

• On a PC, right click the file instead of left clicking to drag and drop. When you release the mouse button, you will get the choice to Copy or Move.
  
• On a Mac, hold down the Option key while dragging.

NEW LIBGUIDES RESEARCH GUIDANCE TOOLS AVAILABLE
Over the summer the librarians created new academic subject guides using the Libguides platform which has been adopted by hundreds of university libraries across the U.S. These guides are designed to recommend appropriate sources and information tools for conducting research in each academic discipline at Lehigh. Libguides software allows many Web 2.0 features such as live chat, commenting, and polling. The academic subject guides will direct students and others to suggested high quality online databases, reference materials, and web resources in their field of study. Faculty members are invited to link these guides from their Blackboard or other course management sites. You can find the subject guides on the Library Webpage at the link under Library News which reads – NEW Library Research Guides. The subject specialist librarians are also using this software platform to revise and create special “Course Guides” at the request of faculty to assist their classes with focused research assignments. An example of a course guide can be seen at http://libraryguides.lehigh.edu/Entp_398. We welcome faculty suggestions for resources that they feel should be included in either the subject or course guides.



BANNED BOOKS EVENT AND EXHIBIT
In recognition of Banned Books Week, September 27th to October 3rd, Professor Kathy Olson in Journalism has organized a campus wide celebration of free expression, “Lehigh Celebrates the First!” funded by a grant from the Liberty Tree Initiative.

It will include a multimedia musical program on music censorship on October 19th at 7:00 p.m. in Whitaker Hall, a display in Fairchild-Martindale Library, and the planting of a liberty tree next to Coppee Hall. The Library exhibit of and about banned books will be installed in the display cases in the lobby. A cart of books there will invite students and faculty to take home a banned book. We plan to have our new "ASA on the Go" service at the First Amendment Celebration events so that our users can check out books there as well. We will be using Twitter on the library home page to send out quotations about censorship and freedom. As part of the Celebrate the First campaign, Prof. Olson is asking people on campus to share short remarks about a favorite book, movie or song that has been banned or challenged. PARKING AT LINDERMAN LIBRARY
Library Drive, which runs in front of the University Center and around Linderman Library, has been converted into a pedestrian-only area over the summer. Users of Linderman Library can no longer park in these areas. There are now some short-term smart card parking meters available behind Linderman, accessible via Williams Drive. Handicapped spaces will be added as soon as possible in the rotunda area. The largest parking area in close proximity is the Alumni Memorial Garage, a short walk from Linderman.



GOOGLE APPS SEMINARS THIS FALL!
Have you tried Lehigh's Google Apps? Google Apps takes standard office, calendar, and Web publishing software into the 21st century. Access your files from any networked computer (great for traveling!), collaborate with colleagues at Lehigh and beyond, and take advantage of the Lehigh customization - the Lehigh e-mail directory is integrated and searchable, for example, and you can elect to share files within the Lehigh community. During the fall semester, LTS staff will offer four Google Apps seminars on these tools:

Google Docs -- Google Docs is analogous to the Microsoft Office suite with its word processing, presentation, and spreadsheet tools, but it's all online (accessible from anywhere) and enhanced with sharing and collaboration features.

Google Calendar -- Now you can manage one or more calendars from an easy drag-and-drop interface. Powerful features make it easy to manage your own calendar, view or contribute to others, schedule meetings with colleagues, share calendar info (or keep it private), and more!

Google Sites -- Now you can create a simple Web page to share files and resources - without the learning curve. While not as full-featured as Dreamweaver, Google Sites is a good way to share files and documents and communicate news.

Google Forms -- When Survey Monkey is more than you need, Google forms are an easy way to gather informal (*non-sensitive*) data or feedback. Responses are captured in an online spreadsheet for review and analysis.

LEHIGH WEBMAIL’S NEW INTERFACE: AN OVERVIEW IN (LESS THAN) 5 MINUTES
Lehigh's new default Webmail interface - called the Standard interface - looks very much like Mozilla Thunderbird and other desktop e-mail packages. With the new dynamic interface, navigating your mail is faster and easier than ever. Lehigh Webmail users can view a short demo of the new interface features at http://screencast.com/t/T7fz1LFFlTr.



NEW FULLTEXT EDUCATION DATABASE
EBSCO's Education Research Complete http://library.lehigh.edu/databasefinder/moreinfo.php?db=240 is the newest addition to the research databases available from the Library. In addition to indexing and abstracting 2,150 journals in education and related fields, the database provides both Lehigh Links (SFX) for connecting to our e-journal collections and full-text in HTML or PDF of 1,200 titles as well.

ERC increases the number of journals immediately available online for titles the Library has in print or in a limited electronic archive currently, as well as titles brand new to our collections. For example, journals such as the Journal of Engineering Education, Multicultural Review and School Psychology Review were in the print collections only. Brand new titles include International Schools Journal and Curriculum Review. Lastly, some titles, such as Educational Leadership, are easier to view online in the EBSCO platform which conforms to library-friendly, multiple user e-journal practice; online access to it previously involved a title-specific user name and password. As the many fans of the library's e-journal collection know, our goal for all electronic resources require only the Lehigh user name and password for remote, off-campus use.

The EBSCO search interface may be changed by a user to Spanish, French, German, Italian, Brazilian Portuguese, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Korean, Arabic, Russian, Turkish, Greek, Polish, Hungarian, and Thai. Similar language preference options are available in the majority of the research databases accessible from the Database Finder http://library.lehigh.edu/databasefinder.html.

ERC supports direct export to RefWorks@Lehigh, "cite this," alerts, etc. Two research databases for history (America: History and Life and Historical Abstracts) are also provided by the Libraries on the EBSCO interface.



LTS INCREASES HIGH PERFORMANCE COMPUTING CAPACITY
Library and Technology Services recently added five new systems to its High Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructure that will give users significantly more computing power.

The new systems include: (1) Dell 16-Core compute server, (3) Sun 8-Core compute servers and (1) Sun 20-Terabyte storage server. They will be available for users who have HPC Service Level II Enhanced accounts. The fee for obtaining a Level II Enhanced account is $300 per year and may be obtained by requesting an account by going to the following web page: http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/hpc/help/forms.html.

These systems will be in operation prior to the fall semester and documentation will be available on the HPC web pages shortly. For users who need the sole use of a large computing system, the High Performance Computing Committee is currently developing policies and guidelines that will make the systems available to rent for limited periods of time. Additional storage will also be made available for a fee. SUPPORTING GLOBAL LEHIGH
The exciting atmosphere surrounding the arrival of new international students on campus is being felt in LTS. Lehigh’s librarians are preparing to welcome these diverse scholars with special orientation sessions geared to explaining the significant differences between how U.S. academic libraries function as compared to their home libraries. Six sessions have been planned to accommodate the demand that exists as our international students pre-register for workshops designed to introduce them to resources, clarify expectations for citing and appropriate use, sign them up for essential services and answer their questions. Over the summer, librarians have worked with the Office of International Students and Scholars, the Office of the First-Year Experience and the Graduate Life Office to understand the special needs of these students who are such a significant part of the Global Lehigh initiative.



LIBRARY LAPTOP LOANERS
The ten library laptop computers available for loan in both Fairchild-Martindale and Linderman Libraries have been replaced with new Lenovo T400 machines. The loan period is for four hours.



DIGITAL BROWN AND WHITE INTRODUCTION SCHEDULED FOR SEPTEMBER 10TH
At noon on Thursday, September 10th, Special Collections Librarian Ilhan Citak will introduce the digital archives of The Brown and White, Lehigh’s student newspaper, to the campus in a session in Linderman Library, Room 200. The resource will be Library and Technology Services’ 12th and largest digital site: a fully searchable digital edition of The Brown and White from 1894 to 2000. The web site will be http://digital.lib.lehigh.edu/brownandwhite. This will serve not only as a valuable resource for the Lehigh community but also as a useful research site to explore aspects of the history of higher education, the development of the local community, and much more. The program is sponsored by the Friends of the Lehigh University Libraries.

MAKING A GOOD IMPRESSION – NEW EXHIBIT
Selected art of Matisse and Picasso, renowned artists whose work is most commonly associated with museums, will be featured in the new Linderman Library exhibition, “The Limited Editions Club: A Pairing of Art and Literature.” Featuring works of art on paper by these and other artists, the show includes classics from antiquity, children’s favorites, and fine literature produced by the private press that has issued books by subscription for eighty years.

Founded according to the vision of George Macy in 1929, The Limited Editions Club has published important works featuring illustrations by famous artists and book designers in small numbers to ensure high quality. The Lehigh University Libraries acquired this important collection thanks to the generosity of alumnus David Green ’22 and his wife Jeannette, early subscribers to the press. The exhibition will be on display from August 12 – December 19, 2009.

PARKING AT LINDERMAN LIBRARY
Since Library Drive, which runs in front of the University Center and around Linderman Library, is being converted into a pedestrian-only area, users of Linderman Library can no longer park in these areas. However, there will be several handicapped parking spaces on the rotunda side available when the project is completed before the fall semester begins. There are changes to the traffic patterns in this area of campus. Currently, parking is available on Williams Drive and around Williams Hall. To get to the parking spaces on Williams Drive, traffic must enter from Taylor to Sayre Drive and proceed west on Williams Drive. To exit cars must go around Williams Hall and proceed east on Williams Drive.

Lehigh Webmail (formerly known as IMP) Upgraded!
LTS recently upgraded IMP Webmail system. This upgrade features a new interface (similar to Gmail) while still allowing you to select the "classic" interface if that's your preference. Three things to note about the new IMP:

1. With the new upgrade to IMP, LTS will be transitioning from the IMP branding to the more generic "Lehigh webmail." You can access Lehigh webmail at webmail.lehigh.edu as well as the usual IMP URLs.
   
2. IMP now offers three interfaces:
   
   • The standard mode is the *NEW DEFAULT* interface -- it's more like Gmail, allowing you to scroll through all messages and drag and drop messages. The search feature is now on the main screen. Note the submenu when you click the search box.
     
   • Classic mode (familiar interface) has some new features but keeps the same look and feel as the old IMP. The other two modes *do not* have all the features/options in the traditional mode.
     
   • Minimalist mode is the mobile-friendly interface.
   
   
3. Users who prefer the old interface will be able to select classic mode from the login page or click on the "classic webmail" tab after logging in. There is an icon to switch from classic webmail mode to standard mode too.
   
   

The new Lehigh Webmail (formerly known as IMP) will replace the portal email on August 1. Please send any suggestions/problems to portal@lehigh.edu.

CHANGES IN AVAILABILITY OF MICROSOFT SOFTWARE FOR STUDENTS, FACULTY AND STAFF
Students may download Microsoft Office for Windows or Macintosh. (Information here: http://www.lehigh.edu/software/.) Students who would prefer the software on DVD may purchase a copy at the LU bookstore - ($10 per DVD, limit 1 of either Office for Windows or Mac.) The Vista operating system upgrade is also available for purchase at the LU bookstore for $15, limit 1 per student. Microsoft policy does not allow LU to make the Vista operating system available via download. The Libraries will no longer be distributing Microsoft DVDs. Faculty/Staff who use SharePoint Designer, either for use on LU or personal computers, will no longer need to purchase it – the software is now available for free from Microsoft (http://office.microsoft.com/ free registration required.) Microsoft Office for Windows and Macintosh, Project, Visio and the Vista operating system upgrade may still be purchased at the bookstore for work-at-home use on personally-owned computers.

REFWORKS@LEHIGH GOES MOBILE!
Your library on RefWorks@Lehigh can now be viewed on your mobile device. With the launch of RefMobile, a “lite” version of RefWorks is accessible from a mobile device such as Blackberry or iPhone. You can add to your collection of citations while at a lecture, during a meeting with your advisor, while attending a conference, or from anywhere you carry your phone. Click here for ten reasons to use RefMobile. Here's an example of using RefMobile: While autism expert Dr. Geraldine Dawson was lecturing at Lehigh, she mentioned a study using an analysis of home movies to identify the onset of childhood disintegrative disorders. Using the “Smart Add” feature, a Lehigh Librarian was able to retrieve and add a citation and abstract for that study to a RefWorks@Lehigh library while continuing to listen to the lecture. In addition to using the “Smart Add” feature to build your library on the fly, you can view/manage folders and add notes. RefWorks@Lehigh is a library service fully integrated with Lehigh Links (SFX), research databases and Google Scholar; it is bibliographic information manager and a citation formatter introduced on campus in spring 2007. This free, web-based service is offered by LTS in support of faculty and student research. There are over 1,200 user accounts and approaching 70,000 citations in RefWorks@Lehigh. For assistance using RefMobile or any other aspect of RefWorks@Lehigh, please see the http://library.lehigh.edu/page.php?id=RefWorks%40Lehigh and contact your Client Services Librarian.

WIRELESS NETWORK UPGRADE
LTS has upgraded the wireless network in Linderman Library. The new wireless network offers broader coverage and faster speed, especially for laptops with network cards that can take advantage of the 802.11n standard. The upgrade consists of dual band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) Aruba access points that use the 802.11n draft standard for higher performance. The next phase of the wireless upgrade will be the EW Fairchild-Martindale Library, which is currently being upgraded, and is expected to be completed soon. *Technical Details* Two SSID's are being broadcast: "lu" for backward compatibility with our existing wireless network and "lehigh" which will be the _new_ SSID to take advantage of the 802.11n performance. Use the "lehigh" SSID whenever possible to take advantage of the higher speeds of 802.11n and for higher security using WPA2.

LTS WELCOMES NEW CLIR FELLOW
For the third time, LTS is participating in the Council on Library and Information Resources (CLIR) Postdoctoral Fellowship Program in Academic Libraries for Humanists. The program “offers recent Ph.D. recipients in the humanities opportunities to develop as scholars and teachers while learning about modern librarianship, digital resources, e-publishing, archives, and collection development both digital and analog.” Our new Fellow, Melissa Grafe, received her Ph.D. in the history of medicine from Johns Hopkins in 2009. Her dissertation entitled, “Making ‘Medical Hall’: Dr. John Archer, Medical Practice, and Apprenticeship in Early America, 1769-1820” examined the shape and texture of late eighteenth century medical practices through the study of a family of doctors and apprentices working in Harford County, Maryland. Her research and teaching interests include early American and nineteenth century history of medicine, history, and material culture. Melissa worked in special collections at the Rare Book Room of the Institute of the History of Medicine at Johns Hopkins for six years prior to coming to Lehigh as a CLIR fellow. She has also worked in museums and historic sites in both Pennsylvania and North Dakota, and has interned for the Smithsonian. Previous CLIR Fellows at Lehigh include Megan Norcia (2005-6) and Lauren Coats (2007-8).

NEW LICENSING AFFECTS AVAILABILITY AND SUPPORT OF ADOBE SOFTWARE (INCLUDING ACROBAT, CONTRIBUTE, DREAMWEAVER, FLASH, PHOTOSHOP AND MORE…)
Due to changes in Lehigh’s license agreement with Adobe, no new versions of Creative Suites and Acrobat will be available through the Install Software page for faculty and staff use. Existing versions of some programs will remain available through June, 2010; however, support for them will be limited.

Faculty and staff who depend on regularly-updated Adobe software are urged to purchase individual copies of the software. JourneyEd offers a significant discount through the AICUP program. For purchasing options or more information, see http://www.lehigh.edu/computing/software/adobe.htm . Adobe software needed for use on a personally-owned computer may not be purchased under the AICUP program, but is available at a discounted box copy price from JourneyEd at their website: http://www.journeyed.com/select.

GOOGLE DOCS FILE MANAGEMENT: THE VIDEO SERIES
One of the biggest benefits of having Lehigh's Google apps is that it's now easy to collaborate on documents with others. For new users, Google provides a good Getting Started video for Google Docs at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XyjY8ZLzZrw. Help desk staff have prepared a video series for new Google Docs users who would like to find out the basics of file management in Google Docs: https://sites.google.com/a/lehigh.edu/lehigh-google-apps/google-docs-file-management .



LAPTOP ENCRYPTION OPPORTUNITY (DEADLINE JUNE 30, 2009)
In January 2009, Library and Technology Services (LTS) began a full disk encryption project for University-owned laptop computers containing sensitive or confidential information. Given the more portable nature of laptops, this project is being taken on in anticipation of a future expectation that all University computers be encrypted.

As a University computer user, we encourage you to take advantage of this offer to have your Lehigh-owned laptop encrypted by LTS using PGP Whole Disk Encryption software. If you are interested, please enter a work order at: http://www.lehigh.edu/help/. An LTS Computing Consultant will contact you shortly thereafter to schedule a time to install the software and encrypt your hard drive. If you have questions or concerns, please contact your departmental computing consultant or the help desk at 8-4357.



PHISHING PREVENTION AND E-MAIL LINKS
Recently, there have been a lot of scam e-mails arriving in e-mail Inboxes, appearing as if they are coming from LTS, and requesting personal information. Most of these e-mails include links to click on, which inevitably navigate you away from Lehigh's web site and onto another, in an effort to steal your information. The wise thing to do is to NEVER click on links in e-mail that ask for personal information. Unless you are paying close attention, you can easily be navigated to a malicious website and give away your personal ID and password.

Currently, you are required to change your Lehigh password every six months. In previous communications from LTS, we provided a link directly to the web page which allowed you to change your password. LTS has come to realize that by providing that link, we are asking users to perform an action we strongly discourage any other time. In an effort to provide consistency, LTS will no longer include those links in password related e-mail. These e-mails will now contain directions on how to access that page manually, rather than clicking on an e-mail link.

FAIRCHILD EXHIBIT HIGHLIGHTS EARTH WEEK
Lehigh University celebrated Earth Day with a week of activities designed to “green” the campus and highlight environmental issues on a global scale. Visit the exhibit in the Fairchild-Martindale Library next to the help desk displaying two weeks worth of printing paper discarded from Lehigh’s public site computing labs. This exhibit will be on display until April 24th.



EXAM, BREAK, HOLIDAY AND SUMMER SESSION LIBRARY HOURS
EXAMS: Beginning Monday, April 27th at 8 am until Wednesday, May 6th at 10 pm Fairchild-Martindale Library will be open 24 x 7 for the spring semester final exams.

Library hours for the May break, summer holidays, and summer sessions will not follow the pattern of recent years. Also, during summer session Linderman and Fairchild-Martindale Library hours will differ. Tentative hours are listed below. Final hours will be posted by May 1st at www.lehigh.edu/lts/hours.html.

MAY BREAK: Both libraries will be open 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday during the break. Closed weekends except for Reunion weekend when both libraries will open 9 am to 5 pm on Saturday, May 16th, and noon to 5 pm on Sunday, May 17th.

MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND: Both libraries closed for the (3) day holiday, May 23, 24, and 25.

SUMMER SESSION: See below for library hours during the two sessions of summer school, May 26th – July 3rd and July 7th - August 14th.
Monday-Thursday: Linderman: 8 am to 6 pm; Fairchild: 8 am to 9 pm
Friday: Both Libraries close at 5 pm (same as in the past)
Saturday-Sunday: Linderman: CLOSED; Fairchild: 12 noon to 5 pm
