Help desk moving temporarily
Heads up! Over spring break, the physical LTS help desk in the EWFM library will be unavailable while the desk undergoes a makeover. The service will be available at an alternate location not yet identified. The help desk phone number 8-HELP will be operational throughout the week. The new design will be more ergonomically friendly to staff, and will allow for more comfortable transactions for clients. Any questions, please contact the help desk at 8-HELP or helpdesk@lehigh.edu.

Online chat with the Help Desk
The LTS Help desk is available by phone, email, or in person, but did you know we offer an online chat service? It's private and has some nifty special features. We can "push" you a Web page, for example, or send you a transcript of your chat session for later reference. If you haven't tried this service, or wonder what it's like, take a look at our online demo at: http://www.lehigh.edu/helpdesk/docs/chat/instant.html

To access the chat service, go to http://www.lehigh.edu/ltschat

For more information, contact the Help Desk by phone at 610-758-4357 or email us at helpdesk@lehigh.edu.

Become a Facebook fan of the libraries!
The Lehigh University Libraries now has a Facebook page and you can become a fan of the libraries. Check out pictures, do a WorldCat search, see the NY Times top articles, see library events, and join in on or start discussions. To become a fan, either do a search for 'Lehigh University Libraries' or 'Lehigh University' and the libraries page will be listed under 'Pages'. You can also use this link:

Text-only links on Lehigh's Web site
In early February, Lehigh's Web site went "live" with text-only links. The text-only link appears either at the bottom of the main Lehigh Web pages or in the upper left-hand corner of LTS Web pages. The text-only version of the Web site allows people with visual and other impairments—including those with impaired mobility, the elderly, and people who may not be able to read small fonts or see low-contrast design very easily—to access much of Lehigh’s Web content. As a result, news articles, library databases, forms and search functionality are now more widely accessible. This functionality is available for other departments to implement. For instructions, contact the LTS Help Desk at 8-HELP.

LTS iPhone Web FAQ
The Apple iPhone can now be purchased through Lehigh's AT&T Corporate agreement with a discount on voice service, a choice of three Enterprise Data Plans, and two optional Global Data Plans for international travelers. No discount is available for the iPhone itself. If considering the iPhone for use at Lehigh, there are important things you should know about how the iPhone works with campus technology. For more information, please see the LTS iPhone FAQ at http://www.lehigh.edu/iphone.

Guidelines on performance rights -- LTS Media Center video collection
Lehigh’s video collection has been built to support the instructional mission of the university and faculty are encouraged to make maximum use of this resource in teaching. In general, the use of most videos that we purchase, and in particular the use of feature films, is limited to a classroom or similar location for instruction. Here are some additional guidelines for video showings:

  • Attendees should be limited to members of the university community;
  • An instructor should be present to provide an educational context for the showing;
  • There should not be off-campus advertising, either through posters or flyers, email or internet, that implies that the showing is open to the general public;
  • No admission fee may be charged

Section 110(1) of the U.S. Copyright Act describes that nature of the exemption that enables us to purchase feature films and other videos that are generally sold exclusively for home use and show them in an educational setting. Occasionally, we purchase films that come with broader rights. Faculty should consult with Media Center staff or librarians to determine the performance rights associated with any particular video.

New Linderman exhibit opening: Cartographic perspectives, showcases Lehigh maps
Lehigh University opens a door on the world through its upcoming exhibit of maps, “Cartographic Perspectives: From the New World to Your World.” The exhibit opens on February 22, 2008 and will remain on display in Linderman Library through the end of June 2008. The show will feature items from Lehigh’s rich map collection. Exhibit highlights include a 1520 map by Peter Apian that was one of the first to identify “America” by that name, Hernán Cortés’ map of Tenochtitlan (now Mexico City), and surveys of the American West. There will be other maps of Bethlehem, from Global Lehigh participants, and from faculty memberships as well. On February 26th, an opening program at 4pm in the Bayer Galleria will provide an introduction by guest curator Lauren Coats, Postdoctoral Fellow, and commentary by Earth and Environmental Science Professor Frank Pazzaglia and History Professor Steve Cutcliffe.

Disk quota increase form now online! // Journal Citation Reports // Securing laptop data // Special Collections received 100 year old campus plan // What's on iTunes University? // Library hours

NOW ONLINE: DISK QUOTA INCREASE REQUEST FORM
LTS is pleased to announce a new online system for requesting disk quota increases. In the past, users had to fill out paper forms to request quota increases for e-mail accounts, webspace (AFS), Compute Server (Vega). With the new online system, requests are electronically routed through appropriate channels, saving time and effort. Users receive an update when their requests have been either approved or denied. Visit the new web form at https://cf.lehigh.edu/accounts/quota . If you have any questions, contact your departmental computing consultant or the Help Desk at 84357 (8HELP).

JOURNAL CITATION REPORTS (JCR WEB)
Journal Citation Reports (JCR) is now available online. When used in tandem with other sources, JCR data enables users to assess the research impact of science and social science journals. The data can play a role in selecting journals to monitor for reading or publication. The online version has a number of useful features such as 10-year analyses of publication and citation patterns, self-citation figures, and graphical displays.
Coverage starts with 2006 and is available from the Library's database finder at: http://databases.lib.lehigh.edu/finder/dbfull.asp?DBID=219 . Coverage for prior years is available in the reference section of Fairchild-Martindale Library.

SECURING LAPTOP AND DESKTOP DATA
PGP HARD DISK ENCRYPTION PILOT PROJECT
Data security is becoming extremely important as the number of data breaches and lost or stolen computers is continuing to rise. Under certain State and Federal laws, the theft of sensitive data must be disclosed to all parties that may be affected. Data is usually classified sensitive when it falls within the guidelines of FERPA (student records), HIPAA (medical records) or GLBA (financial records)or any other data an institution determines as sensitive.
During the past few months Library and Technology Services (LTS) has been identifying and evaluating whole disk encryption software packages that can be used for encrypting laptop and desktop computers in the event of theft or loss. If a laptop or desktop computer containing sensitive data is stolen and the hard drive is encrypted it does not have to be disclosed to all parties affected (as mentioned above) because encryption renders the data unreadable to a person or person (s)who do not possess the encryption key.
After extensive testing and evaluation, LTS has determined that the whole disk encryption software best suited for Lehigh is PGP http://www.pgp.com/products/wholediskencryption/index.html . This software was successfully tested in a small controlled environment, but in order assure it will work for a large group of users, LTS is conducting a 100 user PGP Encryption Pilot consisting of users from various departments on campus. The PGP pilot program will continue through January at which time feedback will be analyzed and a decision will be made as to the use of the software. LTS purchased 100 copies of the software for the pilot so every user participating in the pilot will be able to continue to use the software if he/she would like to do so. LTS is still looking for volunteers. If you consistently work with sensitive data, you will be a good candidate for the pilot program. If you are interested in becoming part of the PGP encryption pilot or ifyou have questions, please contact David Ramsay or Gale Fritsche.

SPECIAL COLLECTIONS RECEIVES 100 YEAR-OLD CAMPUS PLAN
Thanks to the generosity of a Lehigh alumnus, Special Collections has received an original print of Richard Rummell's 1907 map of Lehigh University. Robert W. Numbers, '50, donated the framed 3' x 5' map to commemorate the one-hundredth anniversary of its production.
In addition to the Rummell lithograph, the Numbers family also donated two scrapbooks documenting the 1947-48 and 1950-51 football seasons. It is through the generosity of donors such as the Numbers that we are able to expand our collections and preserve Lehigh's history.
The campus plan will be on display in Special Collections in Linderman Library. Please visit us Monday-Friday afternoons from 1:00-5:00 or call 8-5185 for more information.

WHAT'S ON iTUNES UNIVERSITY?
Lehigh University officially launched its iTunes U site this fall. iTunes University is a free, cross-platform application that allows for the easy management and delivery of podcasts and other media content. This content can be made available in three different ways: to the general public, university only, or by academic course. We are experiencing a steady growth in the number of podcasts in iTunes U andhope to continue that trend. Lehigh's iTunes U site is accessible by going to:http://www.lehigh.edu/itunesu
The publicly available courses are accessed through a guest log in, while the academic courses are available using a Lehigh username and password. In addition to the 65 academic courses that are using podcasts as part of their coursework, there is a rich selection of content that highlights the diverse activities taking place throughout the campus community. For more information on working with iTunes U, please contact Ilena Key at ilk204@lehigh.edu. Here is a small sample of those podcasts. Some other podcast uses include Athletics and the Dalai Lama events.
Under "Events-Arts and Entertainment", LUAG (The Lehigh University Art Galleries) tab, there are podcasts that highlight art events that are happening on campus, such as lecture series, panel discussions and exhibits. Under the "Student Art Work" tab there are examples of several student projects.
Under "Events-Lectures", there is a series of lectures from the "Bioscience in the 21st Century" course. This course is a multi-disciplinary survey course in which several theme-based topics in bioscience and their social/ethical considerations are explored. These lectures are taking place at Lehigh and are given by many experts intheir fields and cover a broad spectrum of topics.
In a course specific to her iTunes U site, Silagh White from ArtsLehigh partnered with marketing course Prof. Ravindra Chitturi who taught "Developing and Marketing New Products". The projects were 5-6 minute videos that presented in-depth information about student arts events or programs on campus. The students worked in teams, with individually created production schedules for each project.
